Camp Wapiyapi

Wapiyapi is an organization designed to offer relief to families with children battling cancer. Pediatric oncology patients and their siblings apply to attend a week-long camp near Estes Park, CO in June, paid for by fundraising events held throughout the year.

General fun at camp: Kickball, dance parties, enjoying nature, campfires, art, making new friends!

Campers are individually matched to adult companions to accompany them during activities at camp. My first year I camp, I was matched with the little girl in the photos below. I witnessed her gain confidence, develop camaraderie with other children, and explore the joys of childhood during her time away from the hospital. Oh – and every camper/companion pair is put on a color team – – and the WHOLE week, you are decked out in that color :O)

Camp also taught me the importance of emotional support for the entire family. Siblings of cancer patients often feel left out or don’t receive as much attention. It is equally important for these kiddos to still feel loved and so at camp, they have their very own companion to keep them company the whole week!

Year two at camp: red team leader!

My second year at camp, I opted to become a team leader. Basically, as a team leader, you oversee about 10 camper/companion pairs and make sure that your team has all the fun, loving support that it needs. You get to be a silly leader! I was the red team leader my first year, and had an amazing time with all my campers.

By this time, you could say that I was hooked on camp. I started helping with fundraising events, recruitment for camp volunteers, and family retreats throughout the year. Wapiyapi had a place in my heart!

Each year, camp is a beautiful reminder of all that is good in the world. Tucked away in the mountains, no one can bother you with technology, the days are filled with laughter, and the people surrounding you are the cream of the crop. There’s no denying the Wapiyapi love!
